From the liner notes by Bruce Kimmel:
We began with a huge list of songs, which we then whittled down. As we began to finalise the choices and cast we fond that certain songs were not going to work for the album – we were constantly trying to find a proper and interesting blend of material which would go well together. Consequently, whole shows are not represented here – don’t ask me why – it’s just the way it happened. I suppose we’ll have to do a Volume Two, Three Four and Five, to cover the rest of the brilliant stuff we didn’t get to do here.
Anyway, I truly hope you enjoy this album. It was a real labor of love for all concerned. And let me tell you there is nothing on earth that is more fun than to sit in a studio and hear wonderful singers interpreting the songs of one of the great theater composer/lyricists of our time.
