Synopsis

Fred Trolleycar is a meek, long-suffering paralegal whose chronic back and neck pain have left him isolated and unfulfilled. When he meets Regan, a warm and spirited client seeking a divorce, she encourages him to try acupuncture. During treatment, Fred discovers that the needles in his back produce musical tones, turning his pain into an extraordinary phenomenon. As word spreads, Fred is thrust into unexpected attention and romance, forcing him to confront the deeper causes of his suffering and the possibility of healing both body and heart.

Reviews

“It’s daft and cringe-worthy like The Office, with offbeat comical rhythms bouncing through the dialogue. But it’s also magical and ethereal … you enjoy spending time with Fred and can’t help but root for him.”
Movie Nation

Song of Back and Neck is a ridiculous (in a good way), oddly moving portrait of being stuck in a 25-year rut.… It blends elements of both comedy and drama … enlightening and occasionally hilarious.”
Observer

“Do we really need another sad middle-age white guy comedy? Probably not, but if we have to have them, at least let them be more like Paul Lieberstein’s Song of Back and Neck. The artist best known to audiences as Toby from TV’s The Office makes his first step behind the camera for feature filmmaking to largely positive results, handling some slightly morose material with equal parts sincerity and dry humor.”
