Synopsis

Shrek the Musical brings DreamWorks’ beloved animated fairy tale to the stage in a heartwarming and hilarious live-action adaptation.

The story follows Shrek, a grumpy but lovable ogre who sets out on a quest to rescue the spirited Princess Fiona from a dragon-guarded tower in order to reclaim the solitude of his swamp from Lord Farquaad’s dispossessed fairy tale creatures. Along the way, he’s joined by the talkative Donkey and discovers that true love and friendship often appear in the most unexpected forms. Featuring energetic choreography, colourful staging, and a score filled with wit and emotion, the film captures the magic of Broadway’s Tony-nominated production in a dazzling performance for all ages.

Reviews

Broadway production:

“Fiona is fun. No wonder Shrek falls in love with her. And when Mr. James responds to her, you realize that there’s a winning character (not to mention a very fine actor and singer) inside that fright suit.”

“Leading man Brian d’Arcy James may have to conceal his boyish good looks, but his Shrek is an adorable hero and, despite his blubbery prosthetics, an expressive one. James’ delightfully playful, at times plaintive performance leaves no doubt this guy’s just a chartreuse cherub.”

Blu-Ray:

“Jason Moore directed the Broadway play, and Michael Warren directed this filmed performance. Warren does an excellent job of capturing every great moment of the play, and has chosen his angles and shot composition wisely. … The Shrek: The Musical Blu-ray captures all of the glory of the Broadway production. … Nothing can replicate the live experience, but hopefully this release will give youngsters a taste of musicals and create a life long love of the theater.”
